Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy can offer lasting growth whereby one can learn to reconnect to oneself and to others in new and enlivening ways. My approach is exploratory, collaborative and engaged. I focus on helping individuals find relief from their distress while helping them stay with and become curious about their thoughts and feelings. As we develop clarity about our internal experiences, a newfound awareness emerges which allows us to let go of negative patterns and discover a greater capacity to think and feel more fully alive.

Starting therapy can come with mixed feelings, and it’s often challenging to know whether and when you would like to begin. Here’s how we can begin: after speaking first on the phone, and if you decide you would like to meet, we will use the first few sessions for both of us to decide if working together would be a good choice given your needs and my approach and experiences. During this time, we can discuss the areas in your life you would like to work on and you can ask me questions about therapy and what it might be like to work with me. Similarly, I may ask you questions about yourself while I listen closely to your concerns. I appreciate that it can take some time to feel comfortable, open, and honest in this new environment and finding a therapist with whom you trust is tantamount to the process.

I see children, adolescents, and adults in my practice. In child therapy, children communicate their thoughts and feelings through play. It is through this language that children learn to manage and work through troubling feelings. In child work, I regularly meet with parents to offer parenting guidance and support.  In adolescent therapy, some teens continue to use play therapy while others begin to communicate their feelings more directly. Adolescents often find that having a private therapeutic space allows them to discover meaning behind their thoughts and behaviors and helps them define who they are, what they want, and how they may be similar to, and different from, their family and friends. In adult therapy, we look at both your current and past personal challenges and re-work them in the context of the therapeutic relationship. Through this process, we can gain valuable insight into your relationships and internal experiences. Therapy can offer lasting growth where you can learn to reconnect to yourself and to others in new and enlivening ways. It can be a new beginning where you might (re)discover truer and more genuine parts of yourself that have remained unknown.
